A Victorian antique pine storage box which has been painted blue, as was common with older pine pieces, to disguise the pine grain. This was done because pine was originally considered a cheaper material compared to mahogany, elm and other timbers. However because pine tended to be more utilitarian often these items are incredibly robust and well made, expecting a lifetime of hard work, which is certainly true in this example!
The really interesting feature of this particular box, and something I have seen but not with so much age, is the fact that it is lined with Victorian newspaper sheets. This really gives a sense of the history of this item and the stories it could tell...the interior is also fitted with a candle tray to the top left and on the exterior there are two heavy duty metal carry handles.
As can be seen in the pictures supplied this is an old box showing plenty of wear and character. The joinery is all rock solid and shows no signs of movement so it has many years of service left in it yet!
