Victorian Antique Mahogany Perdonium Coal Scuttle Cabinet

£125.00

Description:

A Victorian antique mahogany perdonium coal scuttle cabinet. Originally used to store 'ugly' lumps of coal in a more refined manner than a simple open bucket these perdoniums would be found in the grander houses of the Victorian era where form was preferred to function.

With a raised back supported on turned finnials around the cabinet top and standing on a shallow bracket base. The door is beautifully hand carved and opens to reveal a removable tin container for the coal although this would also serve well as a decorate occasional side table to place a lamp or plant upon, this hiding the historical watermark to the top with out need to refinish the top and maintaining the pieces original condition.

Condition:

This is an antique item of furniture and as such should be expected to show age and wear. Please study the pictures supplied carefully to ascertain condition. As can be seen in the pictures there is a significant watermark to the top of the cabinet. The brace at the back of the cabinet is broken (would have held a small coal shovel). The wood has expanded and split down one side although this has not affected the structural integrity of the cabinet. The joinery is all rock solid and shows no signs of movement.
