A mid-Victorian (circa 1830) japanned work table featuring stunning oriental painted scenery.
The painted hinged top has been removed at some stage, turned upside down and reattached. Hence there are two rectangular marks where the hinges were originally attached at the front of the top. There is also a smaller rectangular mark towards the back of the top where the lock plate was previously located. The scenic paint work depicts coastal scenes featuring four people, various buildings and vegetation. The tapered edge of the top is decorated with a floral motif and does have quite a few chips and knocks. The underside of the top is painted with a much more complex and 'busier' border which encloses another scene depicting people, buildings, vegetation and mountains in the background. Parts of the paint here have been heavily worn away in places, a result of this having originally been the top of the piece as explained above.
The fitted interior contains two large compartments left and right. The lid tops feature gold painted scenery and have fine resin turned knobs, both of which have been chipped and damaged. There is a central removable tray which contains the rest of the fitted interior; another two, smaller, compartments with painted lids and resin turned knobs (in good condition). Above the compartments there are a pair of inkwell compartments, both with two inkwell spaces, framed by fine pierced resin, the left of which is damaged. There is a red velvet pin cushion, various curved and removable trays and one removable rectangular tray. The work top outside edge is again painted in golden scenery. There is a lock and lock plate however it is not functional. Attached to the underside of the top box there is a sliding sewing box upholstered in red velvet and tassles.
The work top is supported on lyre shaped legs, painted with floral motifs and joined with a turned cross stretcher. One of the legs has been broken and repaired with the split visible but secure. There is some lateral movement where the joints fixing the legs to the top have loosened a bit over time. The feet are enclosed in heavy brass claw shoes.
Good condition for age.
