This is a 'Globe Wernicke' drop flap bureau with glazed bookcase and two door cupboard below. The Globe Wernicke brand was famous for modular and highly configurable designs. This piece is particularly unusual as it contains a very rare drop flap bureau writing compartment. In fact we have done some research and cannot find another one exactly like this which leads us to believe this piece was probably on commission and to a set specification.
The cornice/top piece is relatively shallow and is supported on the glazed cabinet below. This cabinet is accessed by lifting the glass door up, which rotates on a hinge at the top, and then pushing the door into the top of the cabinet.
The drop flap bureau opens to reveal a comprehensively fitted writing desk interior with various letter racks, pigeon holes and drawers. The four smaller drawers have a very unusually shaped box frame as can be seen in the pictures. The drop flap comes with a working lock and key.
Sitting beneath the drop flap bureau there is a two door cupboard, with working lock and key, which then fits into the shallow plinth base.
Showing light surface wear commensurate with age. The odd scuff and mark to the finish but nothing significant. The modular parts all fit together easily, the drawers and doors operate smoothly.
